When and How to Use Travel Agencies

Not that long ago, anyone who had to travel anywhere called their travel agent and they arranged the trip. At that time, travel agencies received commissions from airlines, hotels, and rental cars companies. So, in most cases, consumers didn't pay any extra for the service. And travel agents would assist their clients if there were any problems.

By the middle of the 1990s, travel websites like Travelocity and Expedia made the technology used by agencies available to consumers. And soon, consumers could reserve their own flights, hotels, and rental cars using these online travel agencies.

Continental Business Class

Other travel sites like Fodors and Frommers provided plenty of trip planning information, and sites with user-generated content, like Tripadvisor, provided unbiased feedback from other travelers.

It didn't take long for cruise lines to figure out how much they would save by letting consumers book direct. So most of them followed suit and developed web sites with reservation capabilities.

Many people liked the control and flexibility of making their own travel arrangements. And once broadband Internet access sped up the process, it was quick and easy. Nowadays, comparison sites like kayak and hotelscombined let you see all the available options at once.

For simple reservations - a flight from A to B, a night at a hotel you've stayed at before, or a rental car in a U.S. city - there's not much reason to use a travel agent. But there are several circumstances when it's a good idea to use a travel agent - even if there's a fee.

Although travel agents are supposed to be unbiased, most agencies do get commission overrides from certain suppliers, so make sure that you trust yours to choose the travel products that are right for you.

Using travel agencies is a smart idea, if:

* You're going on a cruise for the first time. Most cruise-only agencies know all the cruise lines and cruise ships well and they are pretty unbiased. A good agent will make sure that you end up on a ship that you'll enjoy. He or she will know whether you'll get a better deal on air through the cruise line or not. And you probably won't pay any more for the service.

* You have very specific requirements. If you're willing to pay a fee, a travel agent can arrange virtually anything you'd like to do. Want a private tour of the Sistine Chapel, followed by dinner in the home of a Baroness? A travel agent can take care of everything. All you do is show up with the itinerary that he or she created for you.

* You want to travel independently in a country that's off the beaten path. Find a destination specialist for the area you want to visit and hire them. They usually have contacts in the region with up-to-the-minute information. And the amount of time it would take you to make all the arrangements yourself will make their fee a bargain.

* You don't have the time or inclination to do lots of research yourself. It's not hard to find out when it's monsoon season in India, or which airline workers are planning to strike, but a good travel agent will know all sorts of things that could affect your plans. Things that might never occur to you.

You'll likely be fine on your own for simple travel. But for a once-in-a-lifetime dream trip, you should probably let a reputable travel agent plan your trip for you.

Is Executive Office Furniture Enough For Creating an Executive Office Space?

The term 'executive office space' has undergone great transformation over the years. With the rising trend of office owners spending more time and money on getting the correct décor for their work places, the executive office space has been able to surpass its limited definition. Today, executive work space does not refer to an office that is furnished with expensive executive office furniture. There is much more to the executive furniture that should be used to make an office acquire an executive style. The executive workspace is a place which is characterized by professionalism and class. Hence, it is imperative to decorate and furnish an office adequately in order to impart that executive feel.

Though professionalism and sophistication are the two most important factors that characterize an executive office, it is also important for the office to look comfortable and inviting. Sprucing up an office is not an easy task; you would need to portray a balance of all necessary elements to make an office look sophisticated and warm at the same time. In order to make your office look productive, yet pleasant, you need to look beyond the furnishing of the office with executive office furniture. Though it is true that furniture forms the vital part of an office décor, it is also true that furniture can never determine the entire look of an office.

Continental Business Class

For example, you put a lot of energy and money into purchasing the correct executive furniture; but you fail to plan a décor that goes well with the furniture. What is the use of investing a fortune purchasing the furniture? So think big and decorate your office space sufficiently to make it look like the perfect executive workspace. Firstly, you would need to prepare a design chart where you can plan the layout of the office along with the color scheme and texture of things you would like. Make an organized plan in order to avoid confusion at the time of execution.

For the color scheme, choose simple yet inviting colors. Bold, bright colors never work well with executive décor. Instead choose colors that would make the office look spacious and tidy. Regarding the executive office furniture, be careful to find the correct collection of furnishing items in order to impart an executive look to the office. Contrary to popular belief, expensive furniture does not always look great. Even if the furniture is not expensive, it can be good enough to suit your needs. So, shop around to find the right collection of furniture that reflects your office's personality and taste. You can even impart an eco-friendly look to your office by decorating it with recycled items and some orchids. Accessorize the office elegantly. Do not add items to your office décor that makes it look over the top and clumsy. Pick up refined and tasteful accessories that make the office look sophisticated and warm at the same time.

Is Executive Office Furniture Enough For Creating an Executive Office Space?

Furnishing and decorating an executive office so that it is sophisticated, professional and warm is not as easy as it sounds. Time and energy and a lot of thought will be needed to arrange the perfect executive workspace with executive office furniture. Make your job a little easier by going to OfficeDr.com. Here you will find a large assortment of executive office furniture pieces that will project sophistication, professionalism and warmth. Don't hesitate because everything is on sale now.

Marketing To Your Target Audience 101

Every once in a while we see or hear about companies which produce marketing materials which target the wrong audience, while there is nothing wrong with this practice, the results which the advertiser expect to achieve will fall short due to the fact that the content used to distribute the idea doesn't appeal to the actual buyer.

Internet advertising is somewhat complex due to the great diversity of people who use this great tool. Most new internet entrepreneurs start marketing their products to just any audience, as long as they get some traffic to their sites some think there is no need to change the marketing strategy but it needs to change in order to realize its maximum potential. Some business owners even have their sites translated to several languages in order to make their sites more accessible to people from different countries who speak different languages but the fact is that not every product or service will work in any market and for the most part it'd be a waste of time and resources.

Continental Business

There are several factors to follow when marketing a product or service, the first step is to define your target audience, this will paint the picture and mark the boundaries as far as the requirements individuals must meet in order to be within your range or prospects; characteristics such as gender, geographical location, age, interests, etc. are often taken in consideration.

If your target audience is located within a country in particular, for instance the UK, the best local marketing campaign which a business can execute involves advertising through the local media (TV, Newspapers) as well as sponsoring special events. Partnerships with companies which provide complementary products to your line of business is also a good way to market both companies which can benefit from each other's audience.

Local online business marketing within the UK requires for the campaigns to be geo-targeted, meaning that the target audience resides within the UK, the language used on such campaigns should be plain and simple English; if you translate your sources to other languages you will most likely be getting attention from people who will not take action to your offers. The key point is to always think of the client or customer, qualify them according to your marketing guidelines and build strong features and benefits within your business offers which will attract and keep them coming back.

Musings on Cycling and Virtues of the Continental GatorSkin Kevlar Lined Bicycle Tire

We live today in an environmentally conscious society, marked by a global recession, and obsessed with health and beauty. It is no surprise that bicycles have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity among American consumers as both a means of exercise and transportation, but also as an enjoyable activity and competitive sport. Even counter-culture has embraced the bicycle as an every-mans means of transport, much preferring the humble bicycle to public transportation and automobiles. As a result all sorts of colorful and exciting niches of cycling have taken bloom in this new millennium.

Across the country millions each day don helmet and riding gloves and set off down the trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes of our fair country; be it to school, work, the local coffee shop or merely for pleasure.

Continental Class

My own interests in cycling began like many others. It wasn't long after I could walk that my parents purchased me a tricycle. I graduated on to a sturdy Huffy and finally a serviceable mountain bike. But then something happened. I was a freshman in high school and suddenly a bicycle was passé. Everyone drove around in cars and trucks and my trusty mountain bike collected dust in the garage when I traded it in for a 1968 fire engine red Camaro. Who would have guessed 4 short years later I would rediscover my love for 2 wheel transportation when I went off to college.

There I was, stranded in a new city, a stranger in a strange land. At this point the Camaro was passed down to my brother, for I would be focusing on my studies at the University. Still, walking everywhere was decidedly lame. I longed to feel the cool air rush past my face, and besides, the 15 minute walk to calculus was becoming too much to endure while fighting a hang-over with a cafeteria biscuit and past expired fruit. Suddenly it hit me from behind like a ton of bricks, a swarthy young man on a rusty old cruiser. Fighting the urge to howl certain explicatives across the hallowed quadrangle it took everything I had to retain composure. In that second of twisting agony I had what we alcoholics call a moment of clarity. As I limped off to class I realized that I could be that guy, that swarthy underclassman, running the cracked tires of a vintage Schwinn into the heels of the unexpecting. I could become that man.

So a trip to the sporting goods store settled it. I was now the owner of a shiny new bicycle with a silver frame and knobby tires. Ready to tackle any trail, any obstacle for this iron steed was mine alone to command. My whims became its destiny. Most of that bicycle's destiny was apparently at the local bar as my friends and I took great pleasure in riding our bikes to the various watering holes. We would often laugh of our exploits, reminiscing the nights when we were simply too drunk to drive, yet sober enough to slide behind the handlebars. Our laughter would echo off the quiet row houses, the tree lined streets, their autumn leaves crunching between our wheels like fresh snow.

As my cycling abilities improved, so did my interest in cycling mechanics. I often repaired my bike personally, and because the bike was rather cheap I had plenty of experience. Eventually I graduated to a real bike, a vintage Schwinn World Sport. She was a trusty touring bike with 12 gears and 27 inch wheels. I was a young man rediscovering myself, losing my mind to the sirens of the city. I would drink massive quantities of alcohol and wake up in the morning feeling like death incarnate. Instead of licking my wounds on the couch I would force myself to ride. I would ride to sweat out the sin, the poison within. I would cover great distances visiting corners of the city I had never seen, exploring new sights and smells, and working off some of that protruding beer belly that managed to emerge.

One ever present danger however was the dreaded flat tire. Nothing was worse than being 15 miles out only to feel the back wheel lose pressure and slowly start to walk out from under you. That sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach, that understanding that you were stranded, and it would be a long and miserable walk home, was like nothing else. I would often pack a small pump and extra patches but even then, certain flats were irreparable and the disruption of my ride was a great annoyance.

I tried various products to avoid flat tires; various tubes and goos and inserts. These magical elixirs made all sorts of lofty claims, their dapper salesmen promising to cure flat tires for good. Some of them worked alright, and others worked poorly. Much like you would expect snake oil at the dog and pony show to cure your cold you were often left, unsatisfied.

So finally I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a pair of Kevlar lined tires. I figured if the material was capable of stopping a bullet, surely a piece of broken glass would be easy work for the tires. Oddly enough, I was right. The Continental GatorSkin tire has proven itself to me to be the most effective preventative maintenance against flat tires. As far as tires go, they don't come cheap, but if you really want to stop flats for good and start enjoying your rides then this is the only way to go.

Flying Business Class is the Way to Go

Many people travel by planes on a daily basis for one reason or another. Most often it is business people that have to travel frequently for business affairs and such. Many people find that if they travel frequently they prefer flying business class opposed to coach. Business class has also been called executive class. This allows people to fly with better accommodations and amenities then flying coach but it is somewhat less than first class.

This type of travel makes it more affordable and comfortable for those who don't want to ride coach but yet still want some of the better amenities that can be offered. This type of Business class is generally only offered as the highest class on international flights as it can be a bit costly for the airlines.

Continental Business Class

The business class seats differ greatly from the regular seats as they have the option for you to be able to lie flat where as in coach you can only recline back a bit. There are actually 3 basic types of seats that you can get when flying business class. The seats that are installed for longer trips are the ones that will allow you to recline all the way back. These help people to feel more comfortable when traveling on long flights.

You may get to travel with an airline that offers cradle seats. Cradle seats are the seats that you will find that offer around 160 degrees of recline ability. You will generally find such seats like these on Airlines such as United, Delta, Garuda, Air India and Continental.

Another seat for business class flying that you may find would be the angled for a "lie flat" effect. These seats recline at 180 degrees to allow a person to sleep completely flat, giving them the feel of being in an actual bed. This may help to make their flight less stressful and more comfortable. You may see these seats on airlines such as American Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Air France to name but a few.

The airlines that do not offer seats such as the ones mentioned above for their business class flyers, they do offer more leg room to help accommodate their passengers. If you are finding that you are traveling more and more on business trips or maybe it is even for pleasure, you may want to look into flying business class. This will offer you a roomier seating arrangement without having to pay the high costs of first class.

Creating a Successful Sign Advertisement, Yourself!

Success in advertising can be a tricky thing to achieve; there are many factors contributing towards whether or not your advertisement does what you desire it to do. In this short article I will take you through the main points associated with constructing an effective advertisement in sign form.

Before you even start designing your sign you have to decide upon some key things: what are you trying to say, how are you going to say it, and what is your target audience. Target audience is especially important as it takes into account things such as age, gender, status and class (which are very important to your finished design). This article will help you mainly in the how are you going to say it category, which is often the most difficult part.

Continental Business Class

Firstly you need content; what should you include in your sign? Generally you want to promote your business, so it is essential that you state your business' name and include some form of contact (email or phone) or address. For the target audience to take in this information however you need to attract, and hold their attention first. Size and colour are generally the best way to attract attention; consider your location and try and use colour that is inconsistent with its surroundings.

Once you attract attention you need to hold it long enough so you can imprint your message on your audience. Generally this is the hardest part of advertising, and takes some real creativity on your part. You can show something that is desirable towards your target (this could be your product or service), print some useful information that your target would value, or make the main part of your advertisement a joke or funny situation. This will depend upon your target audience, but just consider advertisements like Cadbury's gorilla ad, which had nothing to do with chocolate yet was extremely successful.

When considering content it is important to understand how much to include. If you pack your sign full of content people might become confused and quickly turn away, but if they have to search to find your content then they will give up very quickly. The key here is balance; give your target just enough to keep him interested as this will make it more likely that you will imprint your message upon them.

The last thing you need to do when constructing your sign is to include a call to action; which is a slogan or piece of writing urging your target to do something. This may be "Pick up your phone and call us now" or "Drop by our store at 123 Fake Street, Fakeville", but the main thing to remember here is that this must be clear and easy to understand. You have only a short amount of time to imprint your message, so it should be as uncomplicated as possible.

The Benefits of CCTV

Close circuit television, or CCTV, is defined as the use of video cameras to transmit video to a limited set of monitors. This type of system differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, but is transmitted only to specific television monitors programmed or wired to receive a signal from those cameras.

CCTV is often used for surveillance. Businesses, offices, schools, and even residences may employ CCTV. The most common businesses and offices that utilize CCTV are banks, airports, casinos, military installations, schools, convenience stores, grocery stores and hospitals. The more public access that is available, the more CCTV is typically utilized.

Continental Business

There are many benefits to employing a closed circuit television system in your facility. Many large buildings that have several nooks on the exterior will utilize these systems. This is due to the fact that there are several areas around the building in which a person could hide and attack an unsuspecting person or break into. If the home has gated access, CCTV can be utilized so that people inside the building can see who is trying to enter and prevent allowing access to someone they do not want on the property.

These systems are generally placed throughout all active public areas such as waiting rooms, hallways, entrances and parking lots. These systems are used to not only prevent criminal activity, but should something occur there is a greater chance that the perpetrator can be caught on video to assist police in finding that person.

CCTV systems are designed to operate continuously. They can be as simplified or complicated as you wish. Either way, you're able to protect your facility and monitor activity in and around it.
Continental Access provides CCTV access control options to all types of business no matter what industry they are involved in.

The Benefits of CCTV

Resource box Continental Access is a major CCTV distributor. They carry many different kinds of security and access control hardware for CCTV purposes. Those who wish to know more about the security options available should visit http://www.cicaccess.com/.

With a larger than average spa and salon. Thermal suites with whirlpools, a hydropool, and the largest gymnasium in the HAL fleet, Eurodam is a great choice for active travelers. Almost 70% of the cabins have balconies. And you can watch the action in the exhibition kitchen on one of the many video monitors. The Crow's Best coffee house has specialty coffees, Internet stations, and MP3 music players.

On April 3, 2010, Eurodam leaves Fort Lauderdale and crosses the Atlantic, arriving in Lisbon after eight days at sea. She visits Portimao, Cadiz, Almeria, Ibiza, Barcelona, and Monte Carlo before disembarking passengers on April 19 in Rome. This voyage has a nice mix of sea days and port calls, and passengers arrive in Europe well rested from the time at sea.

Those with more time can stay aboard and call at Dubrovnik, Corfu, Katakolon, Santorini, Ephesus, Athens, and Sicily before heading back to Rome and leaving the ship on April 29.

Transatlantic repositioning cruises on Westerdam.

The 1,916-passenger Westerdam is roomier than most of the other Holland America vessels. And with 11 treatment rooms and a hydrotherapy pool, the Greenhouse Spa is one of their best.

The two-story main dining room serves guest at set times and in open seating. Passengers can also dine at the alternative Pinnacle Grill, Lido Restaurant, or Windstar Café.

Westerdam sails from Fort Lauderdale on April 14, 2010 and arrives in Funchal, Madeira after a week at sea. She visits Cadiz, Almeria, Corsica, Rome, Naples, and Split before arriving in Venice on May 3. Passengers overnight in Venice aboard Westerdam and disembark the next morning.

This cruise calls at some wonderful ports and at press time, fares were more than 60% of the brochure rate. For fans of Holland America, it's a great cruise deal.

The Importance of Planning in Developing Your Home Based Business Opportunity

My readers familiar with my profile know that I am a retired Public Health Administrator with over 40 years experience in directing and managing complex health agencies. One of the most important aspects of my job was planning the health services we provided for the population we served. The planning function was the one area I excelled in. I enjoyed planning. It enabled me to see both the forest and the trees as I developed our service products.

In the same way, we who are now developing our home based business opportunities must engage in the planning process. In Public Health we developed both long range and short range plans. The strategic or long range plan covered three to five years and laid out the steps for accomplishing our vision, mission, and values of our agency. The annual implementation plan selected priorities from the strategic plan and outlined the immediate short term goals and objectives for the next year. In developing your home based business opportunity you must develop both long range and short range plans.

Continental Business

First before even beginning the planning process, you must consider the five reasons you are developing a home based business. These may be addressed by considering the who, what, why, when and where questions. The answers to these questions essentially constitute your needs assessment outlining the reasons for establishing a home based business.

(1) Who are you trying to impact by establishing your home based business - yourself, immediate family, friends, etc.?
(2) Why are you establishing a home based business - to pay for education of a child, to get out of debt, to establish a retirement income?
(3) What are you going to offer through your home based business - a service, a product, information items, etc.? What system are you going to use to do this? Are you going to develop your own website or are you going to opt in to an existing opportunity?
(4) Where and how are you going to market your business (note: extremely important!)
(5) Where are you going to concentrate your efforts - in your community, State, the U.S. or world wide.

Once you answer these questions and essentially define why you need to develop a home based business, you need to start work on your Plans.

I caution you that you are undertaking a long range process. You will not make a ton of money overnight. The legitimate professionals in this business will tell you that. It takes work and it takes time. Fortunately enough people have been through the process that you won't have to reinvent the wheel. In fact, several of these experts now market courses, seminars, continuing education programs on line, to assist you in mastering the learning curve. Take advantage of these experts now. Several of the courses are free. Others you only have to pay a minimum of money to obtain. Start mastering your learning curve now. You will still make mistakes and spend unnecessary money - we all do that because we are human and have to learn from our own experiences. However the theory and practice is out there if you will take advantage of it.

Now you are ready to develop your plan.

(1) Long Range Strategic Plan - Set up your mission, vision, and values statements for your business for the next three to five years . This is the time to dream. You will be revising your long range plan every year to reach out the next three to five years - so be liberal in your goals. Then develop your long range strategic plan - goals, objectives and methodology to meet your dreams.

(2) Annual Business Plan - For the next year, develop your annual implementation plan. You might want to do this in increments of three months (quarterly), revising as you go based on accomplishment of your short range goals and objectives. Read free articles sent to you by the sponsors and mentors of the home based business opportunities you are pursuing. The budget and marketing sections are the most important parts of your annual business plan. Again, there are several excellent references by the leaders in the field on the web. You are encouraged to read all you can in these areas. The primary objective of your marketing plan component is to drive eager buyers to your business - not just curious lookers who may or may not be true prospects.

One of the most important aspects of planning is to be able to evaluate your results. In order to do this, you must set up quantitative indicators for both your long term strategic plan and your annual implementation plan. Set up your objectives for both your marketing and budgeting in quantitative terms and constantly evaluate them for results obtained, revising them periodically. Also, set up a traffic count system by which you can evaluate the number of hits, visitors, pages and referrers being made to your websites. Evaluation is a key component of planning and you will have to become proficient in it to produce the results you want.

Airline Customer Service Careers

The United States airline industry has gradually moved on, away from the bankruptcy of four major carriers, a few years ago. However, this also resulted in the materialization of various discount carriers that have now come to the forefront of the aviation industry.

What Are The Different Job Titles In The Aviation Industry?

Continental Business

Customer Service job opportunities in the airlines industry includes these job titles:

o Ramp Agents.

o Customer Service Agents.

o Reservation Agents.

o Baggage Handlers.

o Line Service Technicians.

Management positions include:

o Customer Service Manager.

o Airport Operations Manager.

o Station Manager.

Who is Hiring?

The commercial carriers offer excellent employment opportunities. For customer service personnel, the turnover rate can be pretty high, depending on certain factors. These include the working conditions and the airline. While trying to identify a customer service placement in an airline, most of the time you are required to work within the airline operations. However, there are certain positions at the Airport Authority or a separate vendor within the airport. Listed below are the airlines that hire agents for customer services:

o Legacy Carriers - Continental, Northwest, US Air, American, Delta and United are all legacy carriers. In the US, these carriers have been of great help in setting up the aviation industry. However, only Continental and American have been able to evade bankruptcy. Therefore, pursuing a career with a legacy carrier can definitely be risky.

o Foreign Carriers - Depending on your choice of carrier, you are sometimes required to speak the language of the concerned carrier country, as well as English. The carriers include Mexicana, British Airways, Korean Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Japan Airlines, Air France, KLM and other flag carriers, along with the different discount carriers from various countries all over the world.

o Discount Carriers - Discount airlines are the best contenders today. Jet Blue and Southwest are two of the best and since both are expanding, the hiring of personnel takes place on a regular basis. Other carriers include USA 3000 and Spirit.

o Regional Operators - These operators act as 'feeder' airlines for the bigger carriers. Regional operators include Republic, American Eagle, Great Lakes, Colgan, Shuttle America and Comair.

o Charter Carriers - Many airlines fly chartered flights and some even fly special scheduled flights. Charter carriers include Xtra Airways, Sun Country and Miami Air.

o Cargo Carriers - These carriers move goods and merchandise and even equipment, from one place to another. Job opportunities here include placement as equipment handlers and sales agents. The principal cargo companies are FEDEX, Emery Worldwide, DHL, Amerijet and UPS.

In 2005, Maxjet Airways and EOS Airlines, two of the most recently launched airline carriers, indulged in a recruitment spree, prior to their first few flights. As is the case with most startups, long-term opportunity questions can never be sufficiently answered. Many new aviation ventures have been known to fail.

The airline industry does provide job opportunities that are promising and stable. While the wages for those who wish to work on an hourly basis is generally low, the benefits, which include flight privileges, are fairly reasonable. Despite all these factors, the aviation industry has always been an interesting prospect for millions of people. The decrease in fuel prices and the strength of the economy have witnessed a rise in the job opportunities in customer service.

Customer Readiness From An Enterprise Perspective

Despite volumes of customer centric musings of the past fifteen years authored by well-meaning academics there is significant evidence that industrial service customers are generally not satisfied with their corporate service providers. Average customer defection among U.S. service firms remains in the 20-25% range annually. The revenue losses are staggering for many of these firms and yet many service provider executives still do not believe that there is a problem. Service providers have gone so far to escape reality that they often employ convenient new formulas re-calculating customer defection. They re-define customer retention and separate controllable and uncontrollable losses. None of this will either improve customer satisfaction or improve the financial impact of customer losses. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of a framework that executives can use to evaluate the current customer readiness of their firms. This framework creates the basis for a sustainable enterprise-wide approach to managing customer equity and avoids the two steps forward, one step backward results of the past.

Before outlining our customer readiness framework we need a common understanding of a few key marketing principles. First, organic growth in a service-based organization is highly dependent on the ability of the service provider to satisfy customer needs or resolve their pain and to enhance the customer's evaluation of the value received from the service. The measure of this satisfaction is generally customer retention in all its forms including loyalty results. Loyalty gains emanate from improved systems that ultimately reduce the variation in all service quality processes. Some of these processes involve hardwired systems and others involve behavior-based systems.

Continental Business

Second, the terms customer satisfaction, service quality, and value are used interchangeably often causing significant problems for service providers. Simply put, these marketing concepts have very different and relevant meanings. Approaching the organic growth challenge as if these concepts are interchangeable is a fundamental mistake and leads to ineffective solutions despite admirable planning and execution. This is not a semantic argument to be sure. Service improvements are driven by first-level, basic attribute performance. Improving on-time delivery is an example. Actually fixing a broken centrifugal pump correctly the first time is another example of a first-level attribute result. Customer satisfaction gains are driven by improving the overall assessment of the service provider's performance. In other words, satisfaction takes into account the customer's evaluation of basic service quality combined with the customer's overall approval of the total service offering (TSO). TSO includes second level attributes resembling the service organization's behavior patterns and trustworthiness.

Finally, customer value is all about executing on the promise of providing positive consequences for the customer firm. Service cycle time reductions, WIP improvements, and Takt measures have no direct relationship to customer value and often mislead service executives to think that good operational numbers will automatically translate into customer value. In many service situations customer value means that your customer avoids bad consequences or achieves a level of competitive advantage as a result of your performance. Look at it this way. Customer value is all about the customer's perception of the third-level attributes received overtime rather than the service provider's operational performance.

Sustainable improvement in all three levels of service can only be achieved through a comprehensive business strategy covering all five dimensions of organizational infrastructure. The five dimensions of our framework are defined as management planning & control, human resource, technology, service delivery, and service marketing. Extensive research into customer switching behavior finds that there are more than fifty risk factors within these five dimensions that require management attention. While this framework is absent a commercially viable acronym it is nonetheless supported by over 6,000 pages of customer survey research! Service organizations that choose to employ a new complaint handling process, for example, without a purposeful understanding of its relationship to all five dimensions will realize un-sustained gains at best, and outright failure at worst.

Let's look at some of the questions to consider if you were evaluating the customer readiness of just one of the fifty risk factors, your complaint handling process (CHP). Is the CHP designed to handle your target group of customers or is it a one-size fits all program? What is the plan to ensure that all service providers directly and indirectly involved with the CHP are trained in the process? What is the communication plan for customers and service providers detailing the new CHP? Does your information technology support the new CHP? What is management's control process and does it provide a thermostatic-like perspective of how the CHP is executed? How will you know if the CHP actually solves the customer's problem? If all this seems a bit academic understand that 65% or more of customers surveyed after exposure to a complaint handling process are dissatisfied.

This article started with a simple question. How to improve the customer readiness of your service organization? The answer is complex and will require the full attention of your team. Our five-sided framework resembling a house will get you going in the right direction. Get your house in order if you want sustained organic growth.

Competitors and Pricing

Clearly, what competitors are doing cannot be ignored when setting prices. For example, a company with a small share of the market will probably find the general price level already set for him. This does not of course rule out the possibility of finding a differential advantage, which will enable a price well above the general level to be charged, especially if only a small segment of the market is being attacked. For example, the fact that ball-point pens are widely available for a few dollars does not prevent Parker's doing good business with very expensive (and top quality) pens for the gift market.

Very often it will be wise to accept competitive prices as the starting point for any development of a marketing strategy. It does assume, however, and possibly wrongly, that competitors have got their sums right. Against this, in an established market consumers will probably have come to accept this level as the 'going rate', and will need a lot of convincing if they are to accept something different. Traditionally the concept of the 'just price' has been talked of in some quarters. This was supposed to be the price acceptable to both buyers and sellers. Normally, of course, this will be the price level that has obtained in the market over recent times -in other words, what the major competitors in the field are currently charging.
Where the 'going rate' is set in this way by competitors, it is often useful to do backward costing, i.e. start with the price at which the product must be sold and then work backwards to the price at which it has to be produced if profit targets are to be met.

Continental Business

The term competitive pricing is sometimes used to describe a price-setting policy where the 'going rate' set by competitors is used as a reference point. A price may be set 'in line with' the competitor's price or 'higher than' or 'lower than' the competitor's price, perhaps on the basis that we wish our product to be perceived as 'better than' or 'cheaper than' the already established competitive product.
